There is overwhelming evidence for Lincoln's overreaching throughout his presidency.
Merely some small hint of the tip of its iceberg was Johnson's impeachment for merely trying to carry out Lincoln's reconstruction plan, which Lincoln had conceived, right or wrong, to have been a presidential, not a congressional, prerogative effort.
Randall wrote a whole book on constitutional problems under Lincoln. They are legion, and much of what he did was impeachable.
