Tell me Krugman is right, but Douglas was wrong.
Before you answer, just remember that Lincoln ran on the Republican party plank of negro slave transportation, not emancipation. He also got legislation passed, immigration legislation, during the Civil War, 1863, to replace the transported negroes with white immigrants.
Emancipation broke a campaign promise.
Lincoln is really a Lord Dunmore figure, who offered slaves their freedom if they would rebel against their colonial owners.
Lincoln cared as little for protecting the wishes of his white democratic electoral Northern white racist base as Lord Dunmore had cared about protecting rebelling white colonists from their armed and freed negro slaves.
That's your Lincoln Deomcracy.
If you are really worried about the death of democracy, then Lincoln is your go to figure.
It certainly died there. And was never resurrected.
Similarly, if Trump could gain a democratic political advantage by deputizing rather than ostracizing Mexicans, Central, and South Americans, trust me he would do it.
