That, for me, is the classic, the quintessential, disrespect for democracy moment. It went on for years.
As even DK noted, they even queered their own northern white racist voter base by legislative deceit.

The only part of this passage I disagree with is the 'sadly'. If DK thinks it was sad for the Radical Republicans to betray their electorate, that is his view. If he thinks that it was sad that Northern whites would not favor negro enfranchisement, he has misunderstood or misinterpreted Whiggishly where northern whites have always stood. That is hardly sad either. It is the facts of the American past, and European history. He cited Tocqueville for the same thing.
In my view the Radical Republicans were traitors to democracy in many ways.
