I wondered whether Macaire and Bertrand, aside from the several things they are normally taken to signify among the French, might also be symbols of the two French Revolutions, the one ending with the demise of the sans culottes, signified by Bertrand, and the other one, beginning there, with the demise of Robespierre, the Revolution of the new bourgeoisie, signified by Macaire?
