Apparently it is hard to find an account that is impartial and actually explains the political and constitutional implications.
Most accounts are multi volume accounts, which either wander all around, like Nevins' account, thousands of pages, never really explaining or even summarizing anything very clearly, usually biased toward the Union side; or they are long winded accounts of civil war battles and mainly military matters, which Americans seem never to tire of reading about; or they are Southerner diatribes.
The summary account I have been reading is by Randall. There was a second edition by Randall, and Donald. It is available used, no longer in print.
