Maybe I have heard the wrong account, but they surely deserved death. See eg The Haunted Wood.
The tragedy of the McCarthy Era was not so much the unfairness of their trial, which it well may have been, but that it occurred only long after so many others, both Russians, and those in FDR's administration, which was littered with them, who richly deserved death, and had eluded it.
The OSS apparently doubled as a Soviet Fifth Column. I didn't make this up; I don't have the skills or the background. See for example Target Patton. Maybe he's got it all wrong...
It was claimed that Patton was deranged, raving about the opportunities for removing the Russians from Eastern Europe, using Germans to do it.
