J C D CLARK'S REVISIONISM VERSUS RANDALL COLLINS' SOCIOLOGY OF PHILOSOPHIES ANALYSIS WITH RESPECT TO FAME

It may be more useful here, to get an apples to apples comparison, of Clark's perspective with Collins',  to characterize Collins' sociology of philosophies rather in terms of what one should call a sociology of ideologies, to situate analysis of Paine. See Thomas Paine, Introduction, p. 2, 3; Collins, The Sociology of Philosophies.

It is undoubtedly quite fair to say that the legend of Paine, even with Clark's caveat re his early ctitics, sucked both the vast contributions of his precursors as well as those of his successors into its false idolatrous glow.
