It is a little disappointing that Randall, as illuminating as his account is, missed the conspiracy aspect of the formation and success of the Republican Party.
he apparently accepted the accounts such as Cole's based on what Lincoln and others had claimed, rather than on what other insiders claimed and pointed out, such as Douglas.
Events themselves bear out Douglas' view, and the Southerner insiders' view, of the Republican party and of Lincoln's role, rather than Randall's or Cole's.
