My advice, to all Americans, is to turn and face our troubled heritage, what Wade calls A Troublesome Inheritance, and come together somehow, really, against all odds.
It will not be about prosperity or no prosperity, more or less or no trade, things like that, anymore.
If you want to survive, any of you, really, you have to come to recognize that there are very much larger struggles and challenges, now long under way, for any and all countries really.
These larger struggles are not really about international economics or global equality or about historic white imperialism or white racism or human rights at all.
They are about enormous numbers of peoples races and civilizations, mostly almost starving, who envy and hate us.
Some are very advanced countries with great power status.
That includes Africans, South and Central Americans, Muslims, Asians, even white, Christian, Russians.
They do not identify with white Americans. They do not identify with American negroes, even if they themselves are African negroes. They don't identify with latino migrants at all. Muslims scorn American Muslim ex pats. Hindus might lynch American Hindus if they returned with their Western views and habits to India. White Russians do not identify with white Americans or white Europeans, except to think of them as assholes.
They are in a wealth trap from which now and in the future there is no real escape and they blame primarily you even for that.
Nicholas Wade notes, p 183, we have squandered 2.3 TRILLION over the past 50 years in aid to Africa, and they are just as poor (frankly much poorer even, in my judgment, in terms of increasing environmental degradation and huge loss of species) as they were back then.
You poor here rightly rail against your poverty and lack of opportunity.
You cry out for what you call equality, as if the term, like racism, meant the same thing here and in the Congo and in Bombay and Calcutta, Arabia, in most of China or Malaysia, Southeast Asia.
Most of these poor people might, in a good year, make what amounts to $300 a year. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
The poor legals here, of any color, would be given probably 10 or 20 times that, or more, one way and another (which here sounds like extreme poverty, and is, for here), and income here goes up into the 20s 30s 40s 50s 100s 500s 100s 10,000s millions of times more a year than they ever can hope to get.
So when rich liberals here, and poor people here, clamor for equality, racial equality, and global wealth equality, people elsewhere now think this is an ideology for them to take to the streets everywhere in the world because the US stands behind it now.
Trust me, none of them are grateful to you all for anything the West or the US has ever done to or for them.
