These were Republican white males who had freed ignorant hostile negroes and given them the vote here, in place of Southern white males, fully 50 or 60 years before these early American feminists even got a sniff of the vote.

If I had been a Northern woman during the Civil War I would have been tearing my hair out that Lincoln, whom my husband had voted for, had just fricking freed these dangerous negroes, and then would have had a miscarriage when I later learned that the Radical Republicans had given the dark bastards the vote when I did not even have any way of trying to get such a thing as the vote in my lifetime!
It is truly amazing that Lincoln wasn't taken out and lynched by folks who had voted for him. The Army was the only thing that saved him. Never mind impeachment, what was done to Johnson for following in Lincoln's footsteps.
Impeachment was too good for Lincoln according to some Northern voters, but Booth got to him first. That is about all one can say.
