Neandeerthals.
The standard Whig prehistory account has it that, for unexplained, and in fact unmentioned, reasons, Neanderthals simply did not evolve much for hundreds of thousands of years, say four hundred thousand, thereby going against even the modicum of natural or man made selection which even genomic prehistory geneticists acknowledge, and which some biologists find even within several hundred years in the very recent human past.
