The actual truth is perhaps different from the old post below.
Putin would not favor Trump as a collaborator, but that was probably not his main goal in favoring him over Clinton.
His main goal was to destabilize, not collaborate.
That also fits better with the Manafort as Soviet agent scenario.

MY OWN SUPPOSITION
would be that Putin would actually not favor Trump over Clinton, for the reasons I have suggested in recent posts.
It even seems quite feasible, to me, that someone like Manafort was intentionally put in, by Putin, to engineer Trump's eventual defeat.
If that were true, then Manafort certainly was succeeding at that, before he was outed.
Manafort was a Soviet asset at the time he was Trump's campaign chairman:
"...Through an error in redacting, the document accidentally revealed that while he was campaign chairman, Manafort met with Konstantin Kilimnik, who is believed to be linked to Russian intelligence. The filing says Manafort gave him polling data related to the 2016 campaign and discussed a Ukrainian peace plan with him. Most of the polling data was reportedly public, although some was private Trump campaign polling data. Manafort asked Kilimnik to pass the data to Ukrainians Serhiy Lyovochkin and Rinat Akhmetov...."
