JEFFERSON COMPARES AMERICAN INDIANS BLACKS AND WHITES

Jefferson finds that they all have a moral sense, even though not equal in other respects. Most Americans take this moral equality as a crucial breakthrough.

This is apparently what was meant by "we hold these truths to be self evident'...this meant all were created equal in having only a moral sense, apparently...How one squares this interpretation, R K Matthews', with them also having certain inalienable rights, is a feat of logic chopping beyond my powers.

Nevertheless, TJ concludes that while American Indians can be assimilated into white America, black slaves cannot.

These are a couple of points to bring out.

Another related point is that, given his views on their relative merits, or lack therof, in other ways, how little the fact of them all having a moral sense ultimately comes to, when the rubber meets the road.
