In reading Kennan's book on Russia and the West Under Lenin and Stalin,
it seems that the US saw itself, back then, with Wilson in 1917,
as having no good dog in that enormous fight,
until the wonderful, marvelous, Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution.
Few Americans will be able to get their minds around this bit of historical fact, or any implications, now.
