This development only reinforces issues I have harped on here about the crippling effects of too much weakness of government at all levels, too much under the control of the all powerful constitutionally armored print and video mass media, even in normal times. 

The Judiciary has also imposed, or simply joined local governments already moving in this direction themselves, imposing onerous, and now videoed, quasi judicial procedures and formalities, as well as restricting and requiring collegial board decisionmaking of many kinds to be done only during public videoed meetings. 

The mass media routinely hacks into government sites to gain information, stories, dirt.

Meeting hackers, of any kind or background including foreign agents, take advantage of the defenselessness of  global internet use of any kind, now especially focussing on virtual public meetings as prime new hack forums.

Officials cannot deliberate on how to respond or vote re law enforcement initiatives, or protests of all kinds, including radical elements among them on all sides except under the watchful eyes and ears of all, including those bent on disorder and crime who claim a right to be heard at their very public sunshine meetings, which the mass media as well as government media are filming or participating in.

RE BACEVICH LIAR RE SAUDI ARABIA NO FRIEND OR TRUMP NOT HELPING ISRAEL

Let's put these issues together here for your reading enjoyment:

Bacevich: Seems like a very reasonable romp through US Middle East misadventures, leading to the conclusion that we should stay out of Yemen conflict, not side w Saudis, not side against Iran.

He decries widespread erroneous conviction that the US is compelled to take sides.

He claims that this is wrong: US no obligations to  one side or the other. He implies we had none in the prior ones either.

Bacevich is a liar.

He leaves out the entire aspect of the US relationship with Israel, and the fact that this relationship does place strong, if not publicly spelled out, obligations, of all kinds, on the US.

He fails to discuss whether, or how, this obligation had figured in prior major Middle east follies he recounts or not, no less than he fails to even mention the word Israel in this misbegotten piece.

You can live in Bacevich's dream la la land account if you want.

That is what the NYT, re Israel, wants you to continue to do.

As even so even handed a historian as David Kaiser has generously pointed out on his blog, the modern neocon movement itself first arose out of conservative orthodox Jewish (not right wing American, not Christian, not libertarian, not econo Reaganite) disappointment at the lack of enough support for the state of Israel as a strong religious state among American Democrats. 

They have never, ever, had, and never will have, enough support from Americans, baby! 

As TLF quite accurately puts it: America is Israel's vital political, military, and economic backer (you might say its only backer, of that kind) in the world.

The West has thought of its conservatism in the opposite way, or its innovation in the opposite way, however you want to turn it; or is this remark itself just a Western Whig Fallacy: comparing cultures which are, frankly, at least in such senses as this, more or less  incommensurable?

I think Collins would claim that his analytical model makes such comparisons not only possible but practical.

I never heard Winch talk in anything like this way, by the way. Some of his writings suggest such things.

Collins asserts by his account that all cultures engender intellectual developments achieving analogous levels of intellectual developments and he gives voluminous examples of this, seemingly across all cultures and civilizations, including those borrowed by one culture from another and then elaborated.

One searches in vain throughout his entire 1000+ pages to find any reference to sub Saharan African intellectual development of any kind, or even a reference to Africa in his index, in spite of the well known fact that there were cultural and religious influences there, mainly from the Muslim world, for a thousand years.

I am guessing that he treats all of sub Saharan Africa as a sort of subset of Islam, although I do not recall him mentioning that anywhere, and his discussion of Islam in Africa is limited to considering it along the coast of North Africa. Sub Saharan Africa certainly does not appear, at least in his work, to have had a separate cultural identity or intellectual history worth commenting on,  apart from discussing Islam elsewhere. His brief account of Stagnation and Loss of a Center in Islam, p 510, for example, fails to mention sub Saharan Africa. See Almoravid, Mali, Senegal, etc.

Having claimed this, there are so many different directions I might take speculation about what these relationships might have been like.

The first thing I will suggest is that there is no one particular model for the relationships between archaic human masters and their tamed archaic humans. Nor is it clear to me that the relationship of master and tamed human was necessarily in all cases that between modern human master and tamed Neanderthal. 

The reverse relationship seems also to me to be a likely feature of the prehistoric interactions between these confronting populations.

One piece of hard evidence for the known interactions between behaviorally modern humans and Neanderthals, over a long period of time, is genetic and genomic evidence in people today. 

Although few people have even 5% Neanderthal DNA, the sum total of the entire Neanderthal genome known to still exist, scattered in tiny amounts among people today, is 50%.

The domestication of dog story dovetails with the sedentism story.

That story has now been found not to have been tied after all with the first development of agriculture story.

Different stories, after all, it seems, sedentism and agriculture.

Why should the development of the first domestic animal be different? Any cleaner, any more elegant?  Any more simple?

RACISM AND ENSLAVEMENT GO BACK TO THE PALEOLITHIC BUT PROBABLY LONG BEFORE

 I am fairly certain that the first domesticated animals were enslaved archaic humans, not dogs.

Dogs came second, maybe third.

The best example to give, from recorded history, of large scale population enslavement, may be the helots, enslaved by the Spartans. 

The Egyptians, and other Middle Eastern Civilizations, were known also in recorded history to rely extensively on slaves.

It is obvious that by that time, smaller scale human enslavement had had a very very long prehistory in many places all over the world.

The development of archaic human enslavement was almost certainly much more important, and probably antedated, the much more highly liberally touted development of agriculture, which in all probability relied from its very beginnings primarily in many places on enslaved labor. 

It certainly did so, in early recorded history, among the Spartans, in the Peloponnese.

Other Greeks including the Athenians had slaves, but they were managed by individual landowner masters, unlike the more plantation type system the Spartans seem to have developed with the Helot population.

He complains about negroes being prevented from voting in Jim Crow (as if Jim Crow were only a Southern phenomenon).

He fails to mention that negroes had been freed and given the voting franchise by the North, and during "Reconstruction" gangs of illiterate and befuddled former slave negroes were literally marched around Southern polling stations to vote multiple times for Grant in 1868, and were the only reason he won. This is only one example.

Negroes ran the South, as Yankee carpetbagger and Southern scalawag stooges, throughout "Reconstruction". 

During that time, they weren't denied anything that the Yankees could enforce letting them do or take over.

The majority of white voters, both North and South, wanted Seymour, a New York Deomcrat, not Grant, a Radical Republican thorough paced tool.

RE IF YOU ASK MOST AMERICANS

Most of them, before 1750, sold as indentured servants, and most of those died before they could get the freedom or acreage they had been promised.

It is a very far cry from how most Americans visualize what their ancestors here were like, and what station in life they had had.

I have only glanced at it so far. Had it on the shelf a long while now.

Allison has a moving lecture, touching on the subject, how most of them died long before the time when they would have acquired freedom from indenture, and large acreage. This was how many early plantations got built up, over many decades, in the 17th Century. The planter owner, whose own ancestor had survived, who bought them, then got their allotment later, added to his or his heir's existing acreage.
