Another reference for my allusions to team play, playing both sides, and whatever else one can make of this.

MISE EN SCENE RE CHINA JAPAN AMERICA KRUGMAN NYT TODAY DE LA TOUR CARD PLAYERS THE OPEN SOCIETY AND ITS FRIENDS
He talks about sharp, simple realities, re currencies, bonds, trade, jobs etc.
American policymakers, 'being taken', goes way back. See some of the prior posts, 'Playing Three Sides In the Cold War', Team Play, Maverick, etc.
There are sharper, simpler, realities, however.
One could do an interesting cartoon, using de la Tour's The Ace of Diamonds, or The Ace of Clubs, as a model.
Uncle Sam would be the 'taken' old lady, but would have to be in drag for this one; it's not that far fetched. Could also be the Maverick Executive in drag.
Cards could also double for currency, and for bonds.
MISE EN SCENE:
To one side, a fireplace; at the hearth a large long metal log poker, labelled 'Wittgenstein's Poker' (or 'Wittgenstein's Wien'). On the playing table, an elaborate decanter, glasses all around, the decanter labelled 'Gin'.
One player, call her Europa, is nodding off. Another, an Asian male, whispering to a third, Asian male, next to the nodder, 'Poke Her'. The Maverick, on the other side of nodder, gesticulating "Pop Her" (Popper). The Caption above might Read
"Trading Poker (Popper):
The Open Society and Its Friends"
The one below, being announced apparently by the old Lady Uncle Sam Maverick, laying down her cards on the table, the one word
"Gin".

PLAYING THREE SIDES ECONOMISTS' ACCOUNTS OF THE RISE OF CHINA SINCE 1980
Why not give another account, a darker account, perhaps the real account, of the sudden and otherwise inexplicable rise of industrial China, since say 1980...
It has to do with the dark side of Japanese economic development throughout Asia, and the concomitant hollowing out of the West.
This sudden economic miracle, PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON, has been described, by Thurow and others, as having been founded somehow on brilliant Chinese agrarian reforms and suddenly boosted agrarian productivity which then allowed a take off of industrialization through a sudden influx of freed up rural labor into Chinese cities..... that is the liberal economists' story, it seems. I haven't studied it closely, but that is what Thurow has said in a lecture I watched.
So, what do you think the true story might look like?
Think about it.

They, BBC, mentioned in passing that Japan and China established diplomatic relations only in 1972.
(Maybe they, relations, had existed in the past at some point. Certainly, playing three sides, non diplomatically, in the Cold War, had long been surreptitiously going on behind the scenes.)
Coincidental that that was around the time of the Nixon Shock? The dumb money in the room.

RE BOBBITT STEINGART WAR OF THE WORLD VIEWS MARKET STATES OR ATTACKER STATES OR RISING LIBERAL MIDDLE CLASSES
Recall from 'Shield' the Market State concepts?
There were three or so so-called paradigms there,
for those little pups.
He has not been at the level of delusion as was Fukuyama with The End of History and the Last Man;
that was a tour de force of delusion.
I rather like Steingart's notion of Attacker States better than the notion of market states of one stripe or another;
that, to me, gives a truer flavor for things to come.
How about also 'Defender States', or 'Victim States', or perhaps 'Slave States' for those ranged in helpless opposition or submission?
Steingart calls his book The War For Wealth.
I would call the future struggle based on what he discusses more a War For Survival.
That is really what is on the cards.
Re Thomas Friedman, NYT editorial today, re why so called rising middle masses everywhere are 'mad', 'A Theory of Everything (sort of)', higher education, higher skills, import high skills workers, higher entrepreneurialism, are still the answer for national bourgeoisie, and wannabourgeoisie everywhere, etc., etc., :
Steingart's book is a sort of antidote.
"What matters this or that reason":
HOLLOW EM OUT THEN FLATTEN EM DOWN
That has been their policy since WWII.
"Technology transfer" was the liberal American business school and developing third world mantra, back in the 60s and 70s. Not just free trade, subsidies, and trade and tariff and nontariff concessions, but flat out technology transfer. I know; I lived through it.
What is so comical, in a dark comedy sort of way, is that the Japanese actually openly bragged about hollowing us out, way back in the early 1970s, right about the time of the Nixon Shock.
Now, of course, we are pancake material for the Chinese and others.
Someone saw this old post here from 2011, sort of says it all:

Re GABOR STEINGART SEES WHAT I HAVE SEEN TOO
Here was a prior post bemoaning the history, the aspect of open subsidized higher education here, 50 years on now. I am certain almost no reader grasped the meaning back then:
He points out the obvious point, re direct transfer by foreign direct investment, also going on for many decades now, and chronicled repeatedly on this site, in a great book, The War for Wealth, here at page 163:
"Knowledge used to be......
never before in history has there been such a massive transfer of knowledge-- without war or conquest-- from one social group to another."
Here was how I put it:
'Never In The History Of Human Conflict Has So Much
Been Given Away to
So Many By So Few.' (I later added, "for so little, so
quickly")
Great point to make, the one I have been making, but how to put it now,
As I have said, game over.

MASSACHUSETTS FOIBLES ANIMAL HOUSE
Let's say you are a student at a big Ivy League university somewhere...
You and the buds are hanging out back of the frat house.
You jokingly tell one of the buds to "go take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut". (Pardon my French for this bit of slang.)
Well, the whole frat knows he is on drugs...
He thinks he sees the doughnut you mentioned, out there rolling away on the lawn, and charges it with his weapon drawn.
He crashes hard on the ground, gets a bad concussion, breaks his neck, and dies.
In Mass, his parent, and or his wife, can now bring a good case against you for wrongful death, and try to collect say 10 MILLION dollars from you on the ground that you caused the stupid bud's ridiculous death.
Not to mention the wayward Mass prosecutor who can charge you with, say, manslaughter, if not also murder 2 for good measure!
Examples like this could be multiplied a thousand times.
Just imagine for a moment the dialogues in the depositions of the other buds, standing around......
Here's one perhaps: you have a road rage encounter. Let's say the encounter was his fault not yours. But he then goes off enraged and accidentally kills three other people in an auto crash. He claims it is all your fault really: you caused the accident, not him. In Mass he may have a case! The analogy to the suicide case is plain enough.
Anything can happen with the right lawyer with the right connections, right charities, causes, churches, legislative and especially judicial campaign contributions record, etc.
New Jersey, now, similarly, a byword. Flopping on the media deck. Florida, say no more...
the smell of the grease paint, the roar of the crowd.

The whole debacle an enormous Mass Lawyer Relief Act.

THE BOOK I AM STILL TRYING TO FINISH AMID OTHER DISTRACTIONS
is Schroeder The Transformation of European Politics.
He has so many insights.
But I don't read it just for his insights, or even for his argument about the durability of the Congress of Vienna.
No. I read it as a somewhat detailed but big picture account of the relentless march of the Democratic Revolution, after 1776 and 1789, up to and through the mid 19th Century.
I treat it as sort of an inadvertent sequel to Palmer's The Age of the Democratic Revolution.
He dolls up the account to demonstrate how, against all odds, the Congress of Vienna settlement mostly kept the peace for most of the 19th century in most of Europe.
That is not, however, the somewhat bigger and darker story his fine print exposes line by line and page by page.

ASS ROAST PHYSICS PHENOMENOLOGY QUESTION FOR THE GIFTED
Many Americans have been getting bigger, not just hotter; or at least it seems to some that way.....
To others, on the other hand, it does not seem that way at all....they see no change.
To Brandy Melville, for example, it seems so, and they actively discriminate against some, who are seen by others, and by BM, as bigger than those.
The question is: are they bigger, really, or do they only seem so, either to themselves or to others?
The more important metaphysical question: What may be causing this perceptual phenomenon?
The Republicans are liable soon to argue that it is not an agribusiness sponsored growth phenomenon at all. (But, what is, after all, an agribusiness sponsored growth phenomenon, anyway, ass roast physically?)
No, it is something entirely different!
It is rather that the universe and everything in it is expanding, and that, as a result, some of us seem larger to some of us, not just hotter, than others seem!
Hypothetically, then, we may all be getting bigger, but some of us seem to be getting bigger than others of us, to some of us, and not to others of us, or not.
The take away: big girls, who seem bigger, and also hotter, than other girls, to each other, are or may be bigger and hotter than other girls, to them.
In memory of Protagoras.

"The war solved no problems. Its effects, both immediate and indirect, were either negative or disastrous. Morally subversive, economically destructive, socially degrading, confused in its causes, devious in its course, futile in its result, it is the outstanding example... of meaningless conflict."
It fits so many I can think of.

THE QUEEN HAS SIX DRINKS A REASONABLE STANDARD
By now we all know the Queen of England really knows how to live, especially when it comes to how she eats and drinks.
The Queen rules the house with her meal choices, including banning garlic from all meals at Buckingham Palace and refusing to travel without a slice of her favorite cake with her.
And just when you thought Queen Elizabeth II couldn’t be more of a culinary inspiration we dug up yet another tidbit that will make you wish you could spend just one day in her royal shoes.
According to a report by Business Insider, the Queen enjoys not one, not two, not three, but four, yes four cocktails a day.
Just before lunch Queen Elizabeth reportedly has her first cocktail of the day, a gin and Dubonnet with a slice of lemon and a lot of ice, according to Darren McGrady, a former royal chef.
Then, during lunch, McGrady revealed to The Telegraph that the Queen will pair her simple lunch of vegetables and fish with a glass of wine and a piece of chocolate.
“She loves it,” McGrady said.
Moreover, Margaret Rhodes, the Queen's cousin, claims that the Queen will also imbibe in a dry gin martini with lunch for good measure.
The Queen then balances out her day during afternoon tea, where she sips on an herbal drink and enjoys another sweet, such as a slice of pie or chocolate biscuit cake.
Finally, the Queen ends her day with a light dinner and follows a “no starch” rule if she’s dining alone, according to McGrady. She then finishes it all off with an elegant glass of champagne before heading off to bed.
As the Independent noted, this puts the Queen at six units of alcohol per day, which would technically makes her a binge drinker by government standards, but she’s 91 years old, so who are we to judge?

India now, The China Sandwich!
SMELL THE COFFEE, GAME OVER

WESTERN MARKET CAPITALIST CULTURAL SOCIAL CONVERGENCE
I am going to begin to describe various institutions, phenomena, and events, which have accelerated in recent decades for various different reasons.
We have long seen at times, in civilization, tendencies to cross fields of endeavor, so to speak.
It has happened in the arts, in sciences and arts, in politics, for centuries, and millennia, really.
Ideas in one field are adopted, modified, imitated, for other media, another social context, other political or commercial or representational purposes, whatever.
What is new, it seems to me, is the accelerating tendency both to integrate new, and also to disintegrate older, in the process, social and personal experiences, histories, products, interrelationships, ideologies and even physical environments of life, really, based primarily and initially on market capitalistic initiatives.
It represents an unprecedented conjunction of private product commercial marketing and development, ubiquitous government deregulation, public and private social and commercial networking innovations, entertainment initiatives and innovations feeding on these tendencies and on the private media's technical and transnational transformations, and on the resulting willingness of all to promote and purvey anything which is saleable in the media and product marketplace, regardless of quality content or social conscience or consequences.
Now there are whole groups of people who identify with, say, The American Girl, or with the Twilight Series world. And with other converged marketing vehicles, amalgams of motion pictures, products, books, and games, household interiors and apparel, designer houses, even, etc.
In my generation, back 4 decades ago, one perhaps saw the beginnings of it, as Obst points out in passing, with the Star Trek series, and trekkies.

LUTHER AND LINCOLN
Risking the ever-present Whig fallacy, I will say a few words 'comparing and contrasting' them.
Let's pretend for a moment that we are watching the Star Trek episode where an incarnation of Lincoln inhabits the scene...........
Luther religiously 'liberated' the princes, that is, gave them a spiritual alternative to, or at least at first merely a spiritual grievance against, the Papacy.
Lincoln 'politically' liberated the slaves, largely for military advantage.
Question: Was Lincoln more a reformation, or a counterreformation type figure?
My guess, is that, were we to refer the issues which Lincoln held dear back to a 'reformation context', he would more likely have been held to have been in the counter-reformation camp, than the other way around. This might come as a surprise to many Protestants, or for that matter, to many Catholics........
I would say that both moves, Lincoln's and Luther's, were made for 'tactical' reasons, given what each confronted. This detail tells once again in favor of a counterreformation stance for a figure like lincoln.
It has been claimed that each sought to preserve a preexisting 'union', the one spiritual and temporal, the other political and modern; and there is ample evidence for this.
I am sure others have compared them in the past, but the similarities, as much as the differences, struck me only recently.
