THE BOOK I AM STILL TRYING TO FINISH AMID OTHER DISTRACTIONS

is Schroeder The Transformation of European Politics.

He has so many insights.

But I don't read it just for his insights, or even for his argument about the durability of the Congress of Vienna.

No. I read it as a somewhat detailed but big picture account of the relentless march of the Democratic Revolution, after 1776 and 1789, up to and through the mid 19th Century.

I treat it as sort of an inadvertent sequel to Palmer's The Age of the Democratic Revolution.

He dolls up the account to demonstrate how, against all odds, the Congress of Vienna settlement mostly kept the peace for most of the 19th century in most of Europe.

That is not, however, the somewhat bigger and darker story his fine print exposes line by line and page by page.
