This book offers reinterpretations of prevalent 18th century discourses. It adds that the most influential activists and reformers tended to have their impact by focusing attention on narrow bands of the available spectrum of discourse rather than by assembling rainbow alliances (an assumption that present-day accounts of  'the Enlightenment' have promoted): reform did not sweep all before it, even in America and France.
