Why not just advert to Ancient Athens, the home of direct democracy.
Could they read or write? Seldom.
But really, why not now also turn, to the archaic human genetic and archaeological record, seemingly now emerging, of what some liberal Whig paleogeneticists characterize as an age of Rousseau esq, Lockean, hunter gatherer, leaderless, equalitarian, small group, democracy?
According to this story, they were leaderless, but made decisions, such as they ever made, together, or often not at all.
They had no hierarchy. None.
They were all utterly illiterate.
They possessed some level of orality.
They were pure, primitive, good, hunter gatherer, Democrats.
They had no leader. There were no followers.
