THE OLD ORDER HE REFERS TO HERE RE US IS THE LIBERAL INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC ORDER I BELIEVE POST WWII

"In Germany in 1932 as in the United States today, the old order had fallen apart.   The country was vulnerable to a vision of a new order--whether it had the slightest basis in reality or not.

The question is not about Donald Trump, so much as it is about how we have become a society that about half its voters would support.  "Cassius was right," as Edward R. Murrow said at another moment of national crisis. "The fault, dear Brutus, was not in our stars, but in ourselves."" DK

The old order he mentions re Germany appears to be the Old European Order, a vastly different 'old order'. (Maybe on the other hand he means Weimar, but that was not an old order but rather a new one.)

There is also an important issue lurking here regarding who the German leadership in WWII was. There were those, like FDR for example, who apparently did not even distinguish between the nature of the German government in WWI from the its nature in WWII, as being in his mind both imperial and aristocratic. The Kaiser of course had been exiled since 1919. Kennan made the point to clearly distinguish these two regimes rather emphatically. I think it is also in Beschloss.

There are still those who claim, nevertheless, that it was the same imperial Germany regime minus only the Kaiser, but it seems that that is a gross oversimplification if not a gross error, and certainly the Hitler movement was not aristocratic in origin, history, or intention.
