I saw, in one of Collins' articles, a reference to Johan Heilbron, The Rise Of Social Theory, a 1990 s work of sociology history, outlining the early development of academic specialization, in Europe, of course. I have ordered the book.
Collins wrote a book, back then, The Credential Society, which I refer to here, at times, on these themes and others. see eg this prior post:
