RE TALKING PIKETTY AND STEINGART VERY DIFFERENT MECHANICAL ECONOMIC OUTCOMES
In fairness to Piketty, he does at many places point out that there is nothing natural or spontaneous about certain economic phenomena re how shocks have been handled, etc., and that politics and other social sciences play a greater role than encompassed by mere economics. I was glad to see that he advocates a return to political economy.
Reconstruction was as little a mechanical, very long term, economic malaise, as The Marshall Plan was a very quick mechanical economic miracle.
The Morgenthau Plan for the South, the Marshall Plan for the Axis. All very mechanical.
Put differently, the North did to the South very much what the British did to India according to Steingart's lurid account. The big difference is that the South was part of the country whereas India was a colony.
Only a Western civ fool would do to its own South what Steingart claims the British did to India.
It's a Western Civ theme. Similarly for the Morgenthau Plan.
The West's plan should have included breaking up the Soviet Union in 1918.....and not thereafter boom anyone, anywhere else, you didn't have to boom, and were not prepared, later, if boomed, to confront militarily.
What Steingart says the British did to India should have been the standard going forward.
One needs to contrast Steingart's India passage with that of someone like Quigley, re Gandhi.

David Kaiser's post, some time ago, re Soros, etc.
This was my favorite quote from Soros (in Kaiser's post):
"Popper’s hidden assumption that freedom of speech and thought will produce a better understanding of reality is valid only for the study of natural phenomena. Extending it to human affairs is part of what I have called the 'Enlightenment fallacy.'"
A great insight. Commenting on Kaiser's current post, one might also call it the Free Press Fallacy, or even, say, The Drew Pearson Fallacy.
I would just call it The Karl Popper Fallacy, and let people wonder how far I mean to go on that.
I would add, to the elements of Soros' Enlightenment Fallacy, a faith in free, open, Smithian, (and eventually global), markets.
Yet, this addition sets me off from Soros and his, otherwise, and in other contexts, quite globalist tendencies.
Most liberals are not nationalists, deep down, but rather anti nationalist globalists, nowadays. It was not always so.
Let's put it this way, the Nazis gave nationalism an unnecessarily ugly rap.
(The Bolshevics somehow avoided this type of bad rap, largely because of the gross ignorance and naivete of Western regimes, and their conservatives, and their liberals.)
I would just advert, momentarily, to a great small book by Butterfield, in the enlightenment context, The Whig Interpretation Of History. (Maybe I'm just stuck, Tory like, on Regius Professors of History, or just stuck on Regius anything.)
In a similar vein, the ideas of the Founding Fathers, as Bailyn has pointed out, owed more to radical Protestantism, and the common law, (one could also add commercial self interests, including, preponderantly, smuggling, tax evasion, and slavery) than to enlightenment ideas per se.

HAASS BOOK A WORLD IN DISARRAY

Why is it in disarray?
Whig liberalism, nevertheless, believes, must believe, and has long believed since say 1760, that we are forever moving, however fitfully, to ever higher universal democratic ground.
Where, in God's name, could Haass' higher ground, he calls it World Order 2.0, ever come from, at this point?

I read a few pages of Walter Lippmann, another CFR type, New York Jew, socialist, Santayana, etc., drafted Wilson's Fourteen Points (certainly not Wilson), world famous NYT journalist, A Preface To Morals, call it the sunny side of The Enlightenment. Far cry in some ways from his journalistic colleague, Drew Pearson. They don't want to glance over their shoulder at The Enlightenment's Dark Side.
What can you do? He knows he is dealing with the pieces left over from the Reformation, cobbled together with the Enlightenment's sunny side, so called reason.
But the Enlightenment Dark Side has always still been there. Phenomenology, relativism, doubt, passion, existentialism, chaos, chance, nature, unbelief, amorality.
There is nothing inherently scientific about democracy.
There is nothing inherently humanistic about science.
