It was a day of news.

The morning brought word that one of the lifetime members of the AHA attending the annual convention had been arrested and tossed in jail for jaywalking.

On Thursday, just after noon, the Tufts historian Felipe Fernandez-Armesto was arrested by Atlanta police as he crossed the middle of the street between the Hilton and Hyatt hotels. After being thrown on the ground and handcuffed, the former Oxford don was formally arrested, his hands cuffed behind his back. Several policemen pressed hard on his neck and chest, leaving the mild-mannered scholar, who's never gotten so much as a parking ticket, bruised and in pain. He was then taken to the city detention center along with other accused felons and thrown into a filthy jail cell filled with prisoners. He remained incarcerated for eight hours. Officials demanded bail of over a thousand dollars. To come up up with the money Fernandez-Armesto, the author of nineteen books, had to make an arrangement with a bail bondsman. In court even the prosecutors seemed embarrassed by the incident, which got out of hand when Fernandez-Armesto requested to see the policeman's identification (the policeman was wearing a bomber jacket; to Fernandez-Armesto, a foreigner unfamiliar with American culture, the officer did not look like an officer). The prosecutors asked the professor to plead nolo contendere. He refused, concerned that the stain on his record might put his green card status in jeopardy. Officials finally agreed to drop all charges. The judge expressed his approval. The professor says he has no plans to sue. But the AHA council is considering lodging a complaint with the city.

Update 1/8/07 In response to the news that Atlanta police had arrested Fernandez-Armesto for jaywalking, the AHA council decided to send a letter of protest to local officials who had helped stage the convention with the understanding that the AHA's concerns would be passed along to the appropriate city authorities.

On the days after the professor's ordeal, the Atlanta police were continuing to stop historians from jaywalking. Anybody caught crossing the street against the light was reprimanded. DOES MASCULINITY EXPLAIN VIOLENCE?

Males predominate in every form of violence, from the micro-level up through wars and other macro-violence. Is it because of a biological universal--the testosterone theory of violence? Or an omnipresent cultural archetype of maleness? Statistics would appear to bear this out.

But frequency statistics by themselves do not answer the question. If violence is male by virtue of being a biological universal, it should have no exceptions. That females are under-represented in committing violence, however, shows that women are capable of it. This suggests an alternative explanation: women have been historically denied opportunities to be violent.

On the anthropological and historical evidence, women have been excluded from military and weapons training and combat sports. When combat was confined to close physical proximity ("man-to-man" or "hand-to-hand"), greater male size and musculature gave men predominance, upon which cultural exclusion was built. This was true too when distance weapons (bows, spears, slings) were muscle-powered. As weapons became mechanized, size and strength made less of a difference. Even among men, the Colt revolver was called "the great equalizer", and Billy the Kid could bring down contemporary Goliaths.

Integration of women into armies and police forces has been a long time coming, but for the past two centuries their exclusion has been largely a matter of cultural tradition and male monopolization. These have been worn down in the modern era of mass democratization and the mobilization of social movements.

The ideology persists (although now argued from a liberal pacificist direction) that women are more peaceful than men. Hence society would become more peaceful at all levels to the extent that women gain political leadership. But this does not appear to be true. Throughout history, when women were rulers, their reigns were as likely to be warlike as males: the heinous religious persecutions of Protestants under Queen Mary ("Bloody Mary") and of Catholics under Queen Elizabeth I; imperialist wars under Queen Victoria and Catherine the Great (also known for engineering assassinations of rivals at the Russian court); the Red Guards urged on by Jiang Qing (Madame Mao); Eva Peron, the Argentine dictator's wife who avenged social slights with executions; Margaret Thatcher, who repaired her lagging popularity and won re-election by launching the Falklands/Malvinas war. Violence was always easiest to unleash at the level of high command, but modern emancipated women have also been on the front line of political violence: Vera Zasulich who used a revolver to shoot a Russian Governor, setting off the populist ("terrorist") movement that assassinated Czar Alexander II in 1881; Ulrike Meinhof of the Baader-Meinhof Gang in 1970s Germany; Patty Hearst with the machine-gun wielding Symbionese Liberation Army; numerous women in the clandestine Red Brigades of 1970s Italy; in the contemporary Middle East, women suicide bombers appear to be a way for women to gain some public status among ultra-male-dominated conservative Moslems. In the assault on the US Capitol in 2021, the only violent death was a woman officer (formerly in the Air Force military police) shot leading the break-in. (The others died of heart attack or stroke.) On the personal level, the proportion of women committing homicides and other violent crimes has been steadily rising, suggesting ongoing integration is moving on all fronts.

Such examples show that generalizations of the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" variety are useless as explanations. Women have not had the opportunities, the training, or the cultural encouragement to enter potentially violent situations. When these barriers have been lowered, women act very much as men do. Not to say women are merely assimilating into masculine culture. The revelation of empirically-detailed sociology of violence is to recognize that situational dynamics determine what happens--not the background classification of individuals.

Whether the increasing participation of women as activists in the world of violence is a good thing or not is not a question to be decided by sociology. I would point out, however, that the success or failure of violence is above all a matter of emotional domination, not sheer physical strength. Women as well are men are capable of both imposing and resisting emotional domination, including in situations of sexual violence. And that surely is a good thing.

Re Krugman's Nasty, Brutish and Trump

 

Let's just quote Hobbes' whole state of nature phrase: solitary poor nasty brutish and short.

 

The Enlightenment state of nature, Krugman's, that of Locke, Diderot, and Rousseau, and of course Adam Smith, etc, was really a state of benign Godless anarchy, where isolated individuals, basically good but stupid by nature dwelt mostly in peace, plenty, and accidental harmony, pursuing their natural appetites. See eg: Catholics and Unbelievers in 18th Century France, Index Locke, Diderot, Rousseau. See especially p 133:

 

"Paradoxically, the men who trusted so highly in the powers of intelligence regarded the mind as essentially vacant and inert; the idea of the passive mind was indispensable to their system.  it was the guarantee that the truths of nature might be perceived without distortion.  It was the basis for the distinction, then so important and so clear, between enlightenment and prejudice.  It was the metaphysical groundwork for the belief that men were equal, and that they possessed the quality of perfectibility, that is, susceptibility to progress.  Minimizing the effects of will, denying original predisposition, refusing to see any inevitability in human nature, the doctrine was flatly contrary to the Christian idea of sin; and by representing man as a passive child of circumstances, easily abused by his environment, it slipped sometimes into a notion that human nature, when crude, is good; and that order, restraint, discipline, and suppression are affronts to man's dignity and freedom."  Palmer, p 133, 134

 

For the Enlightenment thinkers, government was part of the problem, not the solution, and so it was with the colonists.

 

So when Krugman says something like this, claiming to criticize only the American right, he shows himself to be truly a Whig pundit idiot:

 

"It is, on the part of much of today’s right, a war on the very concept of community, of a society that uses the institution we call government to offer certain basic protections to all its members."

 

The founding fathers did not trust government, and refused to rely heavily on it, especially the federal one, even for protection.

 

They were mostly yoeman jacobin anarchists like Jefferson, or religious protestant radicals.

What Krugman attributes accusingly to Trump is actually, as Palmer shows in great detail, Krugman's own time honored Enlightenment Ideal itself: "... it slipped sometimes into a notion that human nature, when crude, is good; and that order, restraint, discipline, and suppression are affronts to man's dignity and freedom." RRP

Krugman's Enlightenment is the same as Trump's, the same as Rousseau's. 

Krugman just doesn't realize it yet, nor do you:

THE OTHER INCALCULABLE BLUNDER BIGGER THAN LOSING WWII TO THE SOVIETS

Was this role below, leading to American style market globalization, quoted in an earlier post from Sir Michael Howard:

I would point out however, regarding Professor Howard's term ' imperial domination ', that the American colonies suffered nothing like imperial domination, really, nothing whatsoever comparable to that of more primitive pre industrial societies at that time.

Reading Bailyn's accounts in Ideological Origins, and The Origins of American Politics, and having been persuaded by Professor Allison's presentations on this topic, nothing like real imperial domination was ever really visited on the American colonists, except in their fevered imaginations.

Granted, they were unrepresented in Parliament, but so also were Birmingham, Sheffield, and I believe Manchester, at that time.....

As Allison pointed out, they were the most lightly burdened people by government impositions in the world, ever, while also being, on the other hand, among the most heavily benefited, I would add, before or since, in all of world history.

The British fought, and won, the Seven Years War, which Washington began, defending the colonies, among many other objectives, against both the French and the Spanish, shortly before the Colonies chose to rebel in gratitude.

This seems the start of one of the stories they tell IN THE 1619 PROJECT.

You can say it, this modern ideology, began way back with old Stokely Carmichael, and his term systemic racism. Black Power: The Politics of Liberation.

Now, Wikipedia calls it Institutional Racism, a distinctive feature under our liberal ideology only of Western white male dominated Civilization.

Their story is that racism itself as an idea only began, and only began first here in America, in the aftermath of Bacon's Rebellion. 

Nothing more ridiculous can possibly be imagined. These folks claim that racism itself began with white folks here in America starting to think they had to distinguish negroes from themselves to properly feel good about enslaving them.

Then negro theorists came up with the notion that whiteness itself was a negro construct based on that "white oppression history".

I have discussed that there was little difference economically and physically between enslavement and indentured servitude, and that half white colonists were in much the same condition of servitude for terms of years as negro slaves were for life, but that is hardly to say or think that there weren't huge differences ethnically racially and culturally for and among those groups in the 17th Century, as even a casual look at even say White Over Black would show.
