After his own conspirators had doublecrossed him re a Senate seat in 1858, he was fully prepared to publicly rat them out as closet abolitionists, destroying their chances of survival, had they not knuckled under and agreed to his terms as the Republican candidate in 1860.
That comes out crystal clear in Holzer's book and Douglas' remarks.
