If the room has the opportunity for windows, or for more windows, this is one starting point for an optimal design.
If it is large enough for a central island, then different work areas can be more easily designed to function in different areas.
Requirements of dish shelving, sink washing/ rinsing, and dish washing, in close proximity, on the one hand, and food prep and cooking on the other, imply designing these two main areas in different, nonconflicting, but readily accessible areas of the kitchen floor plan.
If windows can be had only on one wall, then the logical place for storing daily dishes is on another wall, presumably of four walls.
If these 2 walls are the long walls of the room, and you can afford all windows on that wall, then the windows and the daily storage shelving need to be on opposite sides of the room, since multiple windows will not permit daily storage upper shelving along that wall.
In this configuration, these two areas would be sited along opposite sides of a probably rectangular island.
