RE BOZO ROMER ONOMICS SOME CALL IT REASON OR HOOVER ENLIGHTENMENT
"reason: In terms of real per capita income, Americans today are seven times richer than they were in 1900. How did that happen?
Paul Romer: Many things contributed, but the essential one is technological change. What I mean by that is the discovery of better ways to do things. In most coffee shops these days, you'll find that the small, medium, and large coffee cups all use the same size lid now, whereas even five years ago they used to have different size lids for the different cups. That small change in the geometry of the cups means that somebody can save a little time in setting up the coffee shop, preparing the cups, getting your coffee, and getting out. Millions of little discoveries like that, combined with some very big discoveries, like the electric motor and antibiotics, have made the quality of life for people today dramatically higher than it was 100 years ago."

re recent dk passage quoted below
Reading Macmillan's new book.
I came across the passage re Salisbury's frustration at his inability, diplomatically or otherwise, to arrest the slaughter of Armenian Christians in East Ottoman Turkey, in 1895 and after.

I've lost my mind.
I am a total complete nut.
For those who don't know, I lived in a crazy home for 10 years.
I still have major issues, but I am beginning to recover. Something that will never be cured is my inability to poop properly.
My posts may come across as being absurd, but that is when I am not on my meds and I post.
So, toodle doo poopies!
Sending my farty love.

An arresting passage:
"Gen X generally distrusts institutions, including the federal government, It has suddenly become clear that the younger leadership of the Republican Party is not very interested in the United States' role in the world. Among Democrats there is a significant faction eager to intervene for humanitarian reasons, but they too seem to be losing ground. Suddenly, as the New York Times pointed out a couple of weeks ago, the United States has no way of stopping the religious war in the Middle East, fueled by Iran on one side and Saudi Arabia on the other. More than twenty years later it is clear that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not destined to lead to US hegemony. It was the beginning of a general decline or collapse of political authority in large parts of the world--a frightening yet totally unanticipated development, and one which we have no idea what to do about...."
I would just point out, that it is possible that these political developments were neither so sudden, in onset, nor as totally unanticipated, as he suggests here.
Even the collapse, 20 + years ago, or so, "...More than twenty years later it is clear...."
It was clear to some of us, at the time, at that moment.

IT WOULD BE SO HARD TO EXPLAIN
To environmental liberals, like Mr Ezra Silk, how nowhere such initiatives, as he discusses on DKs site, are destined to go.
One only has to refer to initiatives such as cap n trade, en passant, to get the jist.

RE NATIONAL UNITY
Rereading Howard's "Churchill And National Unity"
Even Howard, a liberal I believe, grudgingly acknowledged, near the end, the ultimate need:
"Ultimately it can be achieved only by the creation of national wealth...." to the end of the article.
He had some rather important insights, and distinctions, to make in this article.
Nationalism has had a bad name. It sounds terrible, until one considers the alternatives.
We, here, have never had much of a real sense of it, for many reasons.
We tend to think in terms of your issues (your favorite brands), your state, your town, your anarchic individual rights, etc.

LIBERAL INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC ORDER VASTLY OUTPACES DOMESTIC INSTITUTIONS ARRANGEMENTS
RE gay marriage or prohibition, etc.:
Domestic politics is less and less relevant, going forward, and more and more dangerous to dwell on exclusively, as so many Americans have been trained, by now, to do.
This was not always the case. It is now.

Kennan, The Decline of Bismarck's European Order, 1978, Conclusion p 423
"The Austro-Hungarian Empire still looks better, as a solution to the tangled problems of that part of the world, than anything that has succeeded it."
Amen.
One is tempted, and soon will be even more tempted, to say the same thing regarding the British Empire.
