G LOBOTOMIZATION GLOBALIZATION NOW FAR ADVANCED

G lobotomal global market capitalism may be unwinding faster than enthusiasts have predicted.

Market capitalism, not held in check, eventually gives itself a lobotomy: it globotomizes itself by globalizing.

That has been what we have been seeing for several decades now.

AMERICANS MAY SOON FIND OUT

PERHAPS, AN OLD STORY BY NOW.

That Apple has found out,

that their ideas are being gutted. say lobotomized, and knocked off by copycat Asian nations where their products have been made for so long.

None of that will have been a surprise for me.

re BBC the typical economist line re Japan

'Ask any economist of any stripe what Japan needs and they will give you a very similar list.

Start Quote

To add insult to injury, Japan has been hit hard by the global financial crisis”
Regulation needs to be loosened, foreign investment welcomed and women empowered to stay at work while raising families.'

Question: if this has not worked. in the long run, for almost all already developed economies, or for the successful developing ones,

as we are now seeing,

why would anyone think it should work for Japan now, after a long successful developmental protectionist state period, 1950 to 1980 or so, but then

torpedoed by the US opening to China after the Nixon Shock?

BRILLIANT DISCUSSION OF POLITICS

Randall Collins:
"MATERIAL INTERESTS ARE AMBIGUOUS MOTIVES; INTERACTION RITUAL FOCUS IS BETTER PREDICTOR OF POLITICAL BEHAVIOR"

PAUL FINKELMAN not so good

Yet his description of the real Jefferson is pretty much accurate.

The point, however, is that these , Jefferson's,
were the mainstream white views at the time, everywhere in the world. They were mostly Lincoln's views too! Most abolitionists' as well. Not some creepy hypocritical aberration.

They considered them not fully human, a very very common, if quite erroneous, view.

But it's an issue he does not want to look at that way.

The ' aberration ' here is Finkelman's.

Grandstanding punditry rather than sober analysis.

RE NOCERO RACE AND NCAA

NO MORE A COINCIDENCE, IS IT, THAN RECENT PROSECUTIONS OF INVESTMENT ENTREPRENEURS OF COLOR ON WALL STREET?

One wonders why the nyt did not pick up, or did it, on such similar recent coincidences in its own back yard, so to speak?

Perhaps they had been warned off such a story, or not sell enough newspapers, or raise the bugbear of an attacks among ethnic white rivalries on and off Wall Street?

Yet it's almost always ok to raise the spectre of black white racism here. Indian (not black) entrepreneurs are open season with impunity it seems. No questions asked.

re JUST A SCHOLARLY REFERENCE FOR ALL YOU ZEALOTS OUT THERE CHRISTIANS JEWS AND MUSLIMS

Read  The Bible Unearthed.

It deals with Old Testament, or Torah, period, and later Old Testament, .............. ancient history, the so called ' promised land ' period too, with current archaeological research findings.

Very illuminating.

Paraphrasing a classic line in 'The Graduate', ('plastics')

I've got just one word for you: CAMELS

(The Old Testament is filled with references to ' camel caravans  '.....................)

A must read for anyone who wants to know something,
rather than just believing something.

For the reading challenged, there is a miniseries:

RE BBC ARTICLE RE EAST CHINA SEA ISLANDS CHINA JAPAN

They, BBC,  mentioned in passing that Japan and China established diplomatic relations only in 1972.

(Maybe they, relations,  had existed in the past at some point.  Certainly, playing three sides, non diplomatically, in the Cold War, had long been surreptitiously going on behind the scenes.)

Coincidental that that was around the time of the Nixon Shock? The dumb money in the room.

WELCOME TO WW IV OR V

Most people would say III, but I count IV, or even V.

(I say the Seven Years War, or  ' French and Indian War ', was the first real WW I.

But for those who follow Bobbitt and others, and call the entire 20th Century, WW I, WW II, and then Cold War, as one Long War, then they are at 'WW III' (what I call IV), but only if they Count the Seven Years War as ' WW I ', as I do.

Otherwise, they are only at II....now.

Whatever..... )

By my assessment, it, IV, has actually been going on for a couple of years now,

but Americans, and most others, do not know this.

Asia, not just Middle East, or Eastern Europe, is a dry tinder box.

Even Gibraltar! BBC News Spain versus UK.

Looking, bigger picture, for just a moment, one could even speculate that the actual WW I was not The Seven Years War after all,

but the struggles against the Mongols (first with China, really more a civilizational civil war, like our 2 World Wars and Cold War), with both the Orthodox, and Muslim worlds, and the ultimate conquest of Russia (Eastern Europe) (and parts of Central Asia, and India) by the Golden Horde.

BBC EU UNION NEEDS TO BE MORE LIKE THE US

Lots of luck with that.

"We need a real European state with all the building blocks that the United States put in place two hundred years ago. We need a true European government, a true European democracy, and a real European budget."

Our system is more a ' disunited states ' with a pseudo central government overlay, which does not, and has never, worked very well for its average citizens.

It shows how benighted Europeans are, that they should hold this so called system up for emulation.

re Top Forty song

Someone, it seems, perhaps through 'the BFF' intermediary,

has partially pirated my little dittie caricaturing and mocking the top forty.

Perhaps it's just one of those little coincidences, (but I had heard about it before it happened).

Although, here, it's certainly "not about the money money money" for such a sweet innocent little lyrical grab,

a sort of trick or treat hold up, so to speak,

some little varmint might at least have said " thank you ",
after being such little meanies in the first place.

This is the cleaned up version of it, from many months ago:

I will admit that it was not all that bad, as a lyric.

RE COCA COLA TARGETED BY CHINA BBC ON BEING CHINAFIED

This is really a private matter between these two market capitalist entities.

Nothing really political here, just the normal process of more or less free international markets among private players and occasional dirty tricks by governments acting as private players. Just call it ' team play '.

No need for benighted investors, or God forbid, citizens, to have a care.

Is China a so called ' market state ', or is that something else, yet again?

Any sovereignty or constitutional or military issues here?

Not to worry.

Call in Professor Counselor Bobbitt. He can perhaps help us with being on the verge of a new constitutional order,

since we are sort of, figuratively, on the verge of China, in many ways, already; just not quite Chinafied enough quite yet.

Perhaps China might be made our fifty-first state (?), as we seem to like large numbers of them, historically, anyway,

to help us maintain separations of powers at all levels.

Would that many new voters (billion) sway an election?

Many big political and economic decisions, and actions, are taken routinely by American politicians, based on influence of, and from, foreign governments and NGOs, as well as American private entities and individuals. (Think eg NAFTA AND WTO, Nixon Shock, trade and commerce history chronicled in Trading Places, etc. for example.)

No one here voted for them (foreign political leaders, big foreign lobbyist interests), but sovereignty was given up in this way,

just as surely as it was in the ways discussed in Sovereignty At Bay regarding multinationals and their foreign direct investment history.

CHINA FILES A WTO COMPLAINT AGAINST EUROPE RE SUBSIDIES

So unfair to defend or subsidize one's industries or peoples. Shame on those Europeans.

Remember that it was Clinton who drove that one (WTO) through, on the tail of  NAFTA,

A REPUBLICAN INITIATIVE, BUT HE WAS THOROUGHLY ON BOARD.

RE BBC CHINA BUYS STAKE IN HEATHROW AIRPORT

This is just a tiny example, of what one now often sees, with relatively unbridled so called market capitalism.

Can you say ' leverage decline ' re UK versus China, or China versus other global power players?

Australia has been selling big contracts to them  for a long time now.

What if the deals, some time, somehow, for some unforeseen reason, need to be unwound?

Will it just be a little matter of money?

re the larger disaster looming behind the financial one

Americans have been lead to believe that it has been mainly a financial debacle that has been under way.

Grounds for this are that the so called US economy (nothing like this really exists anymore) has become overly financialized.

That tells only the part of the story.

How did the what- it- used- to-be economy get over financialized in the first place?

Re Thurston Howell Romney, I had said it all back in 06,

and in Boca too!

There are ' property rights ',

and then there are big big big property rights.

many viewers like this one

Who knows why.

It shows a very old cello belly,  off, and the bottom block area of the belly, where prior bottom block outlines, and recent and older repairs of cracks, including plugs or patches or whatever they are called,  share the photo view.

Some of these were quite old, some looked much more recent, throughout the body.

RE KEVIN PHILLIPS BAD MONEY

"THE U.S. POLITICAL SYSTEM IS NOT BROKEN....BUT BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES HAVE CALCIFIED...."

He really will not tackle deeper issues, recent or older, here; he sees all as hunky dory if only the parties would get it together.

He fails to see, or better, refuses to discuss, that always, since the beginning really, say 1776 and before, structural problems have enabled party problems to be blamed, rather than structural ones.

He takes a broad historical perspective. Goes way back into history, everywhere, back to Rome, etc.

Reminds one of Niall's gyrations.

He talks, every few pages or so,  about things he claims neither party's politicians will talk about..........................and points at other recent doleful financial and geopolitical trends the average American can know little about................

Yet, he mentions the Civil War, a hello long standing structural problem here, only once, p 124, for a tangential non point about oil.

Why have politcal parties calcified?

When did that start? (He wants to imply it is somehow a recent development, in an otherwise virtuous political history.)

Why?

Take a guess.

He does talk about structural problems in ch 6 somewhat, but backs away from calling it other than party schlerosis.

At p 156, he sets out his theory from 40 years ago, in a sentence, if subsequent history does not correspond, he calls it a schlerosis of the party system, not the political system structure itself.

RE THE MARKET CALITALIST WORLD OF EDUCATION AND EXPERTISE SHARING

"....Today's universities have an insatiable appetite for cash, and thereby have to cater, in dozens of ways, to those who can provide it. Quite a few, including my own alma mater Harvard, have turned their endowments into hedge funds and thus experienced both the pre-2007 boom and the disastrous 2008 crash. (To be fair, Harvard's endowment just reported a flat year, indicating that its new manager, Janet Mendillo, has in fact adopted much more conservative strategies.) Dr. Hubbard's career is another example of how they function as one side of a triangle that also includes the financial services sector and government...." David Kaiser

I would add that, re our higher educational system, we have systematically given away what Randall Collins calls cultural capital to underdeveloped countries whose goal is to pull abreast and then overtake us.

Our laissez faire higher educational system, though an enormous market capitalist bubble for us, has frankly been of less benefit to Americans than to foreigners in recent decades.

In this sense it has paralleled our market capitalist corporate commercial and industrial sectors closely,

and, once again, according to analogous principles as Collins has pointed out.

The internet has facilitated this trend, a technology which, once again, we also pioneered, then offered to them as well.

Never, in the history of human conflict,
has so much been given away,
by so few,
to so many,
for so little,
so rapidly. Paraphrasing Churchill.

I should point out, parenthetically, that my inferences from some of Collins' views would not be shared by him, based on some of his views, eg that 'we are all one, under the skin', things like that.....

although this seems to me inconsistent with his theory of change as based on conflict, it is what it is apparently, for him.

COMPETITIVENESS ALWAYS WAS A MISNOMER FOR ME

Nationalism is really what it should have been about.

'Competitiveness' terminology begs the whole question,

and gives the discussion into the hands of economists,

who have monopolized what economic rivalry is supposed to be about, including the bouger of protectionism

and to ignorant politicians like Gore, who, for example, waved a copy of Smoot Hawley in a debate over NAFTA, as if that won the intellectual day for NAFTA.

RE RULES FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP DAVID BROOKS

No one person, or even small group of persons could, possibly, 'fix' our political system,

which needs drastic structural overhaul and consolidation, not ever more, decades in, decades out, presidential politics drivel.

And please don't bring up something like EJ Dionne's 'vital center', the kind of bipartisan mutual myopia that kept us in this downward spiral since WW II at least, as a fix in Brooks' terms.

The bipartisan 'vital center', after WWII, is really what got us here.

bob tube comment on Krugman's editorial

His is better than Krugman:

  • Bob Tube
  • Los Angeles
Dr Krugman, here's what you got wrong: Republicans are all FOR economic stimulus and huge amounts of deficit spending -- as long as the President is a Republican. You need look no further than the Bush II Administration for proof --reckless tax cuts, unfunded Medicare Part D, Bridge to Nowhere, two wars on our children's credit cards. Then, when a Democrat became president, Republicans suddenly came to Jesus (in more ways than one) and wanted to cut spending and reduce the deficit, even if it would worsen the economic suffering of Americans. If Romney wins, be assured the first thing Republicans will do is have yet another come-to-Jesus moment when they decide we must stimulate the economy NOW and cut deficits later (when a Democrat is president.) Get it? Republicans in power: reckless spending is good; Democrats in power: sound the deficit alarms and cut spending
