Lincoln had been very much that way, too...
He was even a firm proponent of chicken shit states' rights (i.e. not strong states' rights), at least until he got elected. That really helped, getting elected.
Of course he had to do something about the so called house divided.
He saw no inconsistency there.
He did it his way.
He was 'born this way'!
