The stunning seizure of Afghanistan by the Taliban poses many significant geopolitical questions — chief among them who will fill the vacuum left by the withdrawal of the United States and its NATO allies from the country after 20 years.

The Taliban are on a P.R. offensive to try to show that they are a legitimate, representative governing power that wants to have good relations with its neighbors. The group has sought out its richest neighbor, China, in particular, to emphasize that message.

Yet even before the Taliban had stormed Kabul, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the deputy leader of the Taliban, met with China’s foreign minister and called China “a reliable friend of the Afghan people.”

To explain more fully how China views its role in this new Afghanistan, we sought out Zhou Bo, who was a senior colonel in the People's Liberation Army until his retirement in 2020. He is now a senior fellow at the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Though he is writing in a personal capacity, Zhou is an authoritative voice reflecting the P.L.A.’s thinking on Chinese and international security.

In a guest essay, Zhou describes how China bided its time as the United States fell deeper into the Afghanistan quagmire. “China has kept a low profile in the country since the U.S. invasion, not wishing to play second fiddle to the United States in any power politics,” he writes. “All the while, Beijing was fostering stronger trade relations, eventually becoming one of Afghanistan’s largest trading partners.”

 Yet upon reaching Algeria's Tizi Ouzou province, Kabylie region, the artist was about to have his own life cut tragically short.

On 11 August, graphic footage began circulating purportedly showing Mr Ben Ismail being attacked. He was falsely suspected of having started fires, and locals tortured and burned him before taking his body to the village square.

The videos immediately caused national outrage.

The artist's brother later urged social media users to delete the footage of the attack. His mother, he said, still did not know how her son had died.

Mr Ben Ismail's father said he was "devastated". "My son left to help his brothers from Kabylie, a region he loves. They burned him alive," he said.

According to some local media reports, paranoia and rumours spread throughout parts of Tizi Ouzou, with some residents becoming suspicious of people driving cars with licence plates from other provinces.

This panic and paranoia is alleged to have been stoked by accusations of arson.

The evening before Mr Ben Ismail's death, Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane said the fires were the result of a "criminal act".

In a televised address, he added: "Preliminary investigations in Tizi Ouzou have proven that the starting points of these fires were carefully chosen to cause the largest possible losses."

On the same day, Interior Minister Kamel Beldjoud visited Tizi Ouzou, telling reporters the fires had been caused by "criminals filled with hatred against our country".

This week, Algeria announced it will review its relations with Morocco after accusing it of complicity in the deadly fires.

According to BBC Monitoring, neither officials nor the country's main media outlets have mentioned climate change as a cause of the fires, or as a reason for their vast spread.

This is despite the fact that temperatures of up to 46C (115F) were forecast for the week in which the fires raged.

Also about that time, a major UN scientific report warned of increasingly extreme heatwaves, droughts, and flooding globally.

THE MENU MUSTARD

... is correct about the liquids. The two factors to a mustard's heat are a) the type of mustard used and b) the liquids mixed with it. Yellow mustard seeds are the mildest with brown and black seeds having far more heat (your Coleman's is a blend of yellow and brown seeds so there is a good amount of heat there). There are enzymes in the seeds that are dormant until activated with a liquid. These enzymes release the pungent/spice compounds. Acidic liquids (vinegar) slow that release down. With water, cold quickly activates them while hot water deactivates the enzymes and breaks down the compounds. Added heat (cooking the mustard) further mellows the final product.

So if you want a mild mustard, use yellow mustard seeds, more vinegar than water, hot (boiling) water and gently cook it. If you want hot mustard, darker seeds, less vinegar and cold water.
On a side note, regardless of the method, all mustard has a bitterness when the seeds are first cracked open. However, the bitterness diminishes quickly and by day three is usually gone completely.
Soaking the seeds a few days prior to blending in your choice of vinegar is a great way to go.
