RE ROOSEVELT TRUMAN

Been reading Beschloss' Conquerors. Seems rather well selected, but what an enormously editted narrative it had to be; in that sense, it seems less a work of history than of historical journalism, with highly selective and important quotes interspersed.

What a sad commentary is painted, not just the Morgenthau White saga (also reading The Haunted Wood),
but the whole administrative set up, and approach.

Back in the 70s it was generally thought that the key to good management was keeping your domestic American work force happy and self actualized.......................

I read what seemed like a hundred HBS articles on the subject.

All that changed rather rapidly in the 80s.

I guess these seasoned Harvard academicians were just a little behind the times.

LAISSEZ FAIRE MAVERICK GONE GREEN CARBON CREDITS THE PRICE OF A BIG BUFORD

So called Western environmentalism, carbon market, and greenhouse abatements, mainly helped to artificially boom Asia, especially China, enrich liberal carpetbag traders, and help further hollow out Western industries generally:

BBC article:

"That means more tough times for financial institutions. Particularly troubled is the business of investing in greenhouse gas abatement projects like wind farms or hydroelectric dams in developing countries like China. JPMorgan Chase paid more than $200 million for one of the largest investors in these projects, EcoSecurities, in 2009.

Financiers say these projects used to be gold mines, generating credits that industrial companies could use to offset their emissions elsewhere. But so many credits have been produced by these projects — on top of the existing oversupply of credits in Europe — that they are trading at about a third of a euro."

' carbon credit printing ', similar to fiat currency printing.......

RE THE GERMAN NEW DEAL VERSUS OURS

See Communities Of Discourse pb. p. 402, the paragraph beginning "Although the state was not particularly responsive to socialist demands, it had a long history of intervening in the economy on behalf of workers....these measures...all were opposed by the liberal parties on the grounds that laissez faire was a more appropriate policy toward economic affairs.....Thus the socialist movement was able to unify its objectives around state-sponsored programs rather than having to carve out a distinct agenda amidst competing programs offered by liberal parties, trade unions, and voluntary associations."

Our New Deal was a liberal, bourgeoisie, laissez faire, New Deal.

the menu for Gigi

Gigi knows how to eat........

Sear, in a shallow skillet, several rather thin pork chops, in butter,
then saute onions therein. Deglaze with a little fino sherry or white wine.
Add a dollop of fig jam per chop, and some olive oil, to the deglace; also a pinch of mustard,
and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste.
Roast in the same shallow skillet for 20 minutes @375.
Serve with potato carrot garlic mash, made with milk and butter.
Serve also with field greens with arrugula and sweet onion,
and dinner rolls.

Red Burgundy wine, Chianti, or fino sherry.

Re Kennan

Not widely known I am guessing, but Japan and the USSR had a nonagression pact, in effect, an alliance,

while the USSR was allied with us during WWII,

so that Japan could have a free unencumbered hand to attack us, and others, in the Pacific.

Get ready for a lot more of the same, from all sides.

KOREA NOW AND AN UNSTABLE ASIA AN OSTENSIBLE BIG SURPRISE

Not a big surprise.  I have been saying low grade global war under way now several years, under the radar. Certainly many events have been acts of war already; eg cyber attack on Iranian nuclear program, etc., etc.

See DK's current post.

RE ENLIGHTENMENT AND EDUCATION

See David Kaiser's current post.......
I have been reading Wuthnow's Communities Of Discourse,
instigated by a reference in Collins. Great stuff.
See Collins' relatively early work, The Credential Society. There are some useful references in both to other works in the history of  ' higher education '.
