THE FIFTH CENTURY ENLIGHTENMENT NOMOS PHYSIS DISTINCTION
This was a pivotal distinction, developed at this time. At the simplest, it was a distinction between, or a relationship between, law, convention, and custom, nomos; and what was conceived of as nature, physis.
'Once the view had gained currency that laws, customs and conventions (nomoi) were not part of the immutable order of things (nature, physis), it was possible to adopt very different attitudes towards them.'
A code of laws drawn up by a human lawgiver...could not, ostensibly, be accepted in the old way as part of the everlasting order of things...
On the other hand, the Greeks had long seen laws in the making, yet still had attributed their force and validity to Apollo (immutable order of things, both divine and natural), advising the legislator through the oracle at Delphi.

RE DK CURRENT POST LEFT ECONOMICS
These are a few comments that struck me, but since there are more perhaps, I thought to set them here rather than cluttering DK's site too much.

In the 30s, the world economy broke down as a result of overwhelming economic and financial consequences of war, not because of Enlightened or unenlightened theories of economists like Keynes, Polanyi, or anyone else, or because of mere government policies based or not based on them. Keynes himself was well aware of that, but also coincidentally overstated his (correct) case re economic consequences of the peace.
Another point to make about this passage is that if the world economy is generally now thriving, a thesis coincidentally contrary to most economists' views it seems (most economists now consider all economies in the world fragile, or so they say), how does that square with this companion assertion: 'profound economic changes had wreaked havoc among the lower classes of society in various parts of the world, causing significant hardship and anxiety' ? How could a thriving global economy simultaneously be wreaking widespread hardship? I suppose by thriving he means thriving for the top .1%, but that kind of 'thriving' can hardly be equated with 'healthy'.
A somewhat different point is that if such changes have wreaked havoc on lower classes, hardly a homogeneous group across countries and civilizations, masked over by the singular term "society", haven't they also wreaked havoc on other higher up classes in those same societies, plural, as well? A class society is after all rather like a swimming pool.

I haven't looked at Braudel for a long time, but it may even be that Piketty took his most fundamental insight directly from Braudel's work, although Braudel would not have been in a position to marshall data as Piketty has since been able to do.

You will almost certainly miss the deep ideological hypocrisy in this kind of posture, one that the NYT has taken really from the beginning, pretending that it is the defender of worker and lower and middle income Americans' welfare.
That has emphatically not been true ever really.
Why?
Because at the same time that they are bemoaning these big bad corporate takeover moves, supposedly championing weak disadvantaged Americans, what else have they been doing just as assiduously with the other hand?
They have been the main advocate for globalization, consolidations on enormous scales of MNCs.
The main point for this discussion is that so called ' national ' corporate consolidations are not really national at all anymore, have not been for a very long time, but rather are just another aspect of globalization relating to MNCs, and have been rationalized all along by the NYT and other organs of this propaganda.
The other twin main point here, re workers and middle class incomes here, is that this globalization process which has encouraged corporate consolidation has been driven by the same forces that have been driving wages down in the rich countries and up in the poor ones, leading to global income convergence, which the NYT nevertheless claims to favor.
It favors global income convergence, yet detests falling American middle and lower incomes.
It opposes national corporate consolidation, while favoring globalist corporate consolidation.

Commenting on another blog post, he (Krugman) poo poos the notion of the big corporation as bad actor,
fails to impugn the political system, and the bi-partisan understanding, that allowed these very powerful entities to overgrow,
and blames individual bad actors at the tops of the ones most visibly acting bad.
This is not a very helpful image, and wildly distorts what has been going on to drive globalism blobalism in such an unhelpful direction and extent.
Not that corporations themselves initiated the process of accruing too much reach and power, blobalizing everywhere, or are intrinsically bad,
but now that they're there, not very helpful to blame only certain allegedly bad imperial corporate controlling individuals (even if themselves bloblike) manipulating otherwise benevolent MNCS.
The Republicans permanently abandoned the domestic economy, as even someone like Buchanan pointed out in The Great Betrayal, when MNCs, and foreign interests, not imperial American individuals, became so influential in the 70s that there was no going back.
Buchanan's Chapter "Companies Without A Country", contains some passages, which could be multiplied many times in the literature, showing that it is not individual imperial 'bad actors', but the MNC phenomenon itself, which has been allowed to swell and take over politics.
One can find similar history in Prestowitz, Chalmers Johnson, Alfred Eckes, Jr., Gilpin, Gill, Reich, Greider, Batra, and others.
Of course, if you work for a MNC that has a subsidiary corporation that sells newspapers, it's hard to impugn the entity that pays your salary.............

Watched Lewis, again, last night, with laGarde.
What brought him back to following Wall Street he said was the sub prime debacle, and the extent, as I reiterated recently here, that the big banks themselves nad been what he calls the dumb money, and had lost their ass too, rather than taking someone else's ass for a profit, which they are accustomed to do (they do not, of course, really want to be bailed out, they want to make money.)
Western liberalism has been and continues to be the dumb money ideology, and this sad fact is only now really being brought home to the average person in the West.
There are so many reasons for this late awakening, analogously to the late awakening of big bank executives to the realities of the sub prime debacle.
For example, in 89 (1989), the West actually still thought they had 'won'.
Tragically, it symbolized a huge sign of a loss for the West in general, against the Rest, and not just for the West's Europhile Soviet elite.
