Another interesting chapter is that re The London Times, in Quigley's The Anglo-American Establishment .

People may think, and it seems to me that Quigley himself led them to believe in the book, that the program of the Milner Group, as it had been transformed from Rhodes' day, somehow came to an end with the failures of its program that resulted in WWII, failures for which not only did it not take responsibility politically, then or later, but for which it transferred ostensible responsibility to Germany. Many people in the English speaking world continue to hold this view, because it was part of political and media propaganda even leading up to WWII, that Germany, and no other, had been solely responsible for WWI. It was an article of faith for FDR; see Beschloss, The Conquerors.

Thinking this would be a big mistake. Clearly not only the post WWII political institutional world owed a great deal to the Milner Group's continuing influence on those who fashioned this post war liberal international economic order, but many of the non governmental and private entities set up under the auspices of the Milner group have carried on until today. It seems clear to me that the NYT is such an entity, a legacy of the Milner Group program and propaganda, and especially of Curtis' ideas. The CFR, and the journal Foreign Affairs, are direct lineal descendants.

These topics are anything but new. Since the development of mass media going back to mass printing, it has been used, along with manipulation of non media social and political features of society, to influence or bring about outcomes for or against a particular political objective or regime. There were real conspiracies, fake conspiracies, covert operations, overt influence, media use and abuse of all kinds, as well as straight diplomacy. Palmer's The Age of the Democratic Revolution has passages throughout recounting episodes of this kind, all over Europe and America, connected with actions for or against a particular regime or objective.

One can go back almost to the beginning, when Sophists were accused, rightly or wrongly, of making the worse argument appear the better.

The colonists were technically not operating on a democratic platform, as we think of it at all. This becomes clear if one reads things like Bailyn, and especially Clark. Palmer was confused about the 18th Century antecedents of colonial rebellion, thinking of them at times in class and democratic terms. They were basically late versions of commonwealthmen of various fringe heterodox religious persuasions.

The victory of England's great power enemies (not the colonists) gave democracy no push in Europe not already there. The French Revolution did so.

Britain moved to reform Parliament only after the Napoleonic Wars. The same forces within British political and religious history which had led to the colonial rebellion eventually led in turn to Parliamentary reform, not anything much the colonists either did or said. For the British, the success of the rebellion was a lesson in laxity not liberalism.

No longer enough to have read historians like Bailyn, Greene, Robbins, Palmer, Maier, Gay and various so called Enlightenment scholars and historians, historians of the French Revolution (an enormous corpus), or the legions of American and European political science, constitutional, and political philosophy scholars, and the treasure trove of economists and economic historians and other social scientists like Weber who have underpinned some of them, etc.

Now it is necessary to have read Clark, The Language of Liberty.

TOCQUEVILLE'S PIG'S BREAKFAST IN AMERICA

'The emotional and moral restraint of the American people...'

This was the wishful thinking of a democratic atheist revolutionary.

This is what he thought of America in a more sober moment, a real Pig's Breakfast:

People think that colonists were long united against Britain prior to 1776. They were not. They were disunited, and usually at one another's throats over land or religion or trade, and more.

Colonial America "displayed the problems of England, Scotland, and Ireland in a more acute form." Clark, Ch 3 sec III.

The unrest, disorder, and fragmentation inherent in the place did not improve with time and every increasing immigration of impoverished heterodox, later including even Catholic and Jewish disparate populations, developments unthinkable at colonial foundings.

They think that winning the American colonial Civil War resulted in an end to all manner of violent and wide ranging religious social and economic unrest. It did not.

Whigs read Tocqueville and then read ideas only becoming current by around 1830 back into 18th Century.

R R Palmer had written at great length about a democratic revolution, all of which I read, but he couldn't figure out why they had not used that word! Clark explained why. See Our Shadowed Present, p. 230

I will just add a footnote here (, again,) to this prior post passage (excerpt) reprinted above.

Those Northern states that had abolished slavery had done so not only not to help the black man, and to help the white, and not only by leaving free white labor without slave competition, and not only by eliminating the corrupting influence of owning slaves upon whites, but, much more importantly, they did not want negroes around, free or slave, in the North or anywhere else in America.

That is really what Tocqueville had meant in 1830, in the passage DK quoted.

The Northern cause in the Civil War was supposed, according to the electorate, to result in the transportation, not the immediate, or the gradual, assimilation of negroes, slave or free.

They got screwed in every way. The only good, temporary, thing, for them, was that the Radical Republican Party kept the freed negroes in puppet control of only the South, not the North.

The House Intelligence Committee released Ms Yovanovitch's testimony on Monday.

The career diplomat said that when she sought advice from the US Ambassador to the EU, Gordon Sondland, a Trump donor, he suggested Ms Yovanovitch tweet praise of the president.

Let's just describe the prehistory from the record that exists.

Neanderthals were very gradually driven to ground, over thousands of years of conflict, in what can only be described as a race or civilizational long war of attrition with modern human migrants out of Africa.

Neanderthals certainly weren't killed off suddenly by diseases.

They held territory, lost it, regained it, and lost it, over thousands of years of strife, from 2,600 to 5,400 years of overlap, according to Higham.

They intermixed slightly with modern humans, but that intermixing was minor compared to the violent population replacement that occurred gradually over a wide area over thousands of years.

Neanderthals weren't driven extinct by natural selection at all.

They were driven extinct by cultural conflict with modern human populations from which they differed markedly and readily identifiably in appearance and cultural heritage.

There is plenty of evidence in the fossil record that Neanderthals were often hunted and eaten like prey by modern humans in many places. Doubtless, the reverse is also true. Caves overlooking the Mediterranean in Spain are perhaps the most well known site.

It seems feasible, and probably genetically determinable, that Neanderthals were substantially more intelligent than modern humans.

Not that McCarthy was for anyone but McCarthy, but the story he told was largely true in many ways.

Marshall was sympathetic to the Chinese communists, not to the nationalists, as were subordinates of his, some of them Soviet agents, as well as were operatives in various branches and departments, and in the press.

It was hardly only Marshall who delivered China to the communists single handedly. He had a whole lot of help.

The State Department was scapegoated, but many other public and private entities were on board.

This is one of my thoughts.....

Our constitution had more to do with problems of governance and faith, caused by and inherited from the Reformation, than with opportunities, or ostensibly secular contractarian ideas, emerging out of or generated after what is called the Enlightenment.

The Enlightenment, whatever it is, ended around the time of the American Rebellion, really a British civil war, and a war of religion, as well as a Europe wide conflict.

The heterodox dissenting radicalized Protestant colonists were aided by their deadly Papist enemies in France and Spain, as well as by their anti monarchist Protestant religious brethren in Holland.

We see a similar theme in all wars America has fought, beginning with its American Rebellion, in essence a civil war of religion as Clark has pointed out in some detail, the last such war, the dead end of the wars of the Reformation, in the West.

The later wars weren't religious wars, but they had a similar religious flavor, distinctively American Rebel Patriot, quasi religious crusades of one or another kind. 1812, for example.

What is called The Civil War thus was the Second Civil War, but with a different theme from 1776.
