WATCHED HEIST

Need to put the Powell Memo into proper perspective.

Mark Schmitt's article does that.

I would have thought that it would have been more useful to advert to, say, The Council On Foreign Relations, going back much farther, than the 1971 Powell Memo......

Certainly, a more realistic assessment, by business itself, of its own position, in 1970 or so, was, say, Sovereignty At Bay.

mise en scene rape of the siren servers

Dusty, Hashimoto, and Odd Job, have a group of scantily clad

Jaron looking on helplessly, at right.

Marilyn still there, next to Jaron, but not the object of attention.

RE BBC JARON LANIER SYMBOLIC ANALYST DREAM WORLD WHO OWNS THE ECONOMY

Robot tea time

Re: Sell Your Date To Save The Economy And Your Future

Here is Jaron in the laissez faire, technical expert, symbolic analyst's, dream land:

"If the biggest computers had to pay for information, they wouldn't cease to exist.

Instead big computers would have to earn their way by providing new kinds of value. Spying and manipulating would no longer be business plans, because the raw materials would no longer be free.

In fact, the owners of the biggest computers would do fine in a world of monetised information, because that would be a world with a growing economy."

Unfortunately, this is all bull.

It has been ' monetized '.  It is ' monetized ' in a way.

A monetized web, furthermore, sadly, in spite of what you have been taught, has very little to do with

a ' growing economy ' (Whose economy? Not my economy...),

which is also, sadly, a doubtful concept, at this late stage...

(Where does ' the economy ' grow most?

Answer: China, coincidentally,  a great internet hacker, thief and warrior;

just as an aside to Jaron's theses.)

Take, for example, individual bloggers, or individual or small business sellers' websites, with ads attached as part of an internet access package.

The obvious reality is that these small individual sites, supported by and beholden to the big servers and corporations backing them, have seen how little they are paid for the hits the big boys promote; and how uninterested in their blogs, or sites themselves, most internet surfers are.

Slightly subsidizing an enormous mass of small sellers (but big consumers) in order to really promote big sellers' products to those same small sellers but big consumers. A very successful model, but not for the small wannabe sellers.

Here are a few so called ' siren servers ' no doubt,  Jaron's term, from my site:

re BBC HACK CLAIMS OF AUSTRALIAN SPY HQ SO MUCH FOR CIVILIZATION OF ENGLISH SPEAKING PEOPLES

Australia came out recently opposing the US' (admittedly foolish and way too late, and wrong headed) containment position re China (e.g. why try to ' contain ' your own factory, and largest creditor, even if you could?).

China, I believe, is Australia's biggest trading partner.

Huge materials contracts, etc.

Australia can smell the coffee, on its sniveling hacking admission, true or false, about its erstwhile best friend in Asia.

Australia has been more or less, becoming part of China's Confucian sphere of influence; perhaps I exaggerate

call it a tractor beam of free trade.

RE KENNAN AND A DEFENSIVE WW II AND CAUSES OF DECLINE OF WEST

One is driven back to WW I, and to its end, both ideologically and militarily, again and again.

You have to recall that the US did not even understand, or want to enter, WW I.

It was only because of the Russian Revolution, in 1917, (and the Russian military and economic collapse) that the US saw its liberal way clear to fight with the British and French imperialists against the Germans and their imperialist allies, the Austro Hungarians.........

Certainly, there is no one who can tell me that the Bolsheviks would not have been susceptible to removal by the Western powers, as weak as they then were, during and after WW I?

That, certainly, would not have been a defensive war.

LETS LOOK ALSO AT SOME UNDERLYING REALITIES OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Historically, most liberal economies have been reluctant to prohibit their companies from setting up operations in foreign countries.

Off shoring plant and facilities has become a way of life to take advantage, call it temporary rather than comparative or competitive advantage, of lower labor costs.

These transfers have constituted the single largest transfer of wealth from West to East, and most of this has been in the last 50 years, primarily on our watch.

For many US and European firms, setting up factories in Asia has turned out, in the long run (not all that long, usually, say 4, 5 years, even less), to being tantamount to sort of going out of business, slowly.

Of course, there were early post WW II US  subsidiaries in Europe, ' When in Rome do as the Romans ', ' the world is our oyster ', see Sovereignty at Bay, etc.

Now the situation is one really of appeasement, and of , meanwhile, winding down to the bottom of global costs.

As long as the West peacefully economically disarms,
'nobody gets hurt '.

RE COMMISSION ON IP THEFT A NEW VARIATION ON PRESIDENT'S COMMISSION ON COMPETITIVENESS BBC

US report warns on China IP theft

Reminds me a little of Michael Porter's The Competitive Advantage Of Nations , the result of another Commission back then.

He was on a blue ribbon President's Commission On Competitiveness. There were insights in that book, but he was a real free trade globalist, as all economists have tended to be.

This IP commission, composed mainly of bipartisan globalists too, mostly amateurs in this IP theft subject, plus a military leader or two for good measure; this commission takes the same kind of tack as in the past.

They advocate, for a short term solution, a more nimble, shall we not say, entrepreneurial, President,  (Obama), say a sort of a ' maverick executive ' (Surprise!), to out think these thieves in the global marketplace.

Call in Jaron Lanier, re IP theft, in connection with his book  Who Owns The Future.

RE SOLAR PANEL DUMPING ETC CHINA EU USA APPEASEMENT DEVICE

A deal ' settling ', by apportioning, global solar panel market among them is not a ' free market ' solution (not that I advocate free markets anyway, but that is the constant mantra here).

In the context of the global war, mainly cyber at this time among the big players, now under way, this is merely an appeasement, for now.

It is a leaky global cartel, ' managed trade ', as the term is used.

Only for them would such an arrangement will be a temporary win win, but things won't stay apportioned, or settled, for long.

FORGET ABOUT GAY RIGHTS IN GEORGIA BBC

'A planned gay rights rally in Georgia had to be abandoned after protesters, including Orthodox priests, disrupted the event'

RE ZERO-SUM GAME ETC

Economists have held, generally, that trade is a positive sum game.

Many Presidents, and others, have been fed this view. Here is former President Clinton, a great globalist:

"The more complex societies get and the more complex the networks of interdependence within and beyond community and national borders get, the more people are forced in their own interests to find non-zero-sum solutions. That is, win–win solutions instead of win–lose solutions.... Because we find as our interdependence increases that, on the whole, we do better when other people do better as well — so we have to find ways that we can all win, we have to accommodate each other...."
—Bill Clinton, December 2000.

In fact, I think it is becoming clearer that trade and foreign investment, especially in our modern era of Western developed globalist IT, are in many ways building up a negative sum game situation, particularly for the West, to the extent it exists any longer as a distinct, recognizable, political entity.

This has been the big legacy of the 20th century.

It is, after WW II, overwhelmingly, our American responsibility.

Never, in the field of human conflict, has so much been given away to so many, by so few, for so little, so quickly.

RE BP'S EXPOSURE DOWN HERE AND WHY

Only a very naive, ignorant, or very reckless, entity would have agreed to compensate businesses around here without regard to causation.

I received a solicitation from a couple of law firms, incredible, in their willingness to explain to prospective referrors how the issue of causation is apparently irrelevant, and only a colorable documentary showing of a business loss during a relevant calendar period will suffice for recovery.

Few things are easier, here, than to find experts, specialists really, to aggressively prepare the appropriate business record loss documents.

an old 2010 post inflation deflation theme

 I should point out,

that, when you are gradually, inch by monthly inch, slowly, annually, becoming a third world economy, trading down, down, to cheaper and cheaper produced goods, to the bottom;

reducing prices, down, down, to cheaper and cheaper priced goods,

to the bottom, you tend,

almost by inertia,

to steer a path, because you have to,

between little blips of inflation, or deflation,

sort of looking for a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, perpetual 'soft landing',
at the 'greatest good for the greatest numbers' airfield (let's not call it an airport).

That is what the US 'economy' if one can speak about such a thing, has been doing.

That is why we haven't had much 'overt' inflation, because we have been buying, and producing offshore more cheaply, goods made offshore.

That also is why we haven't had deflation, because their offshore costs were less, for a little while, and printing fiat money to buy them, so long as the money is accepted, wards off symptoms of deflation.

Keeping prices, and wages, gradually 'trickling down' (a different idiom: UNPROSPERITY TRICKLING DOWN) more or less together,

WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Krugman has put his finger on it, domestic jobs, that is the 'sticky wicket' in the whole sordid process, inasmuch as more and more work, of whatever kind, goes offshore, there remain fewer jobs, of any kind, to fund purchase of those cheaper offshore goods.

The other aspect of the situation, re currencies, aside from inflation/deflation, is that these producing countries have begun to realize that US currency is really backed by nothing anymore, no productivity, no specie, nothing.

One takes it, as a medium of exchange, largely hoping to prop up temporarily (self interest) the stultifera navis, and/or to get something of real value from third parties (the old eurodollar situation now globalized).

The Bretton Woods system, flawed from the outset, gold standard even abandoned by US in '71-72(?), a prescription for market sloth, and manipulations of all kinds.

It is not that complicated, really.

Here is a new ' Westernization ' GLOBALIZATION twist:

"At home, cabinet ministers like Michael Gove and Philip Hammond are talking about leaving the European Union," he said. "But in the United States, David Cameron is talking about how much the EU matters."

He said the prime minister would be making the case for a new EU-US trade deal, creating a free trade area which he says could add £10bn a year to the British economy.

Mr Cameron calls it a "once-in-a-generation prize" but the talks could take years and are based on the UK's presumed membership of the EU.
