"They evidently feel no obligation to make our institutions work because they do not believe in them. Sometimes it seems that shutting down the government isn't their nightmare, but their fondest dream...." DK
The vestige, what is left of the impoverished left here, never believed in the US, but was a utopian globalist movement beginning to end.
The liberal, and conservative, international globalist economic and political, order came to look very suspiciously at the nation state itself, as well as, ultimately, Western civilization itself, sadly enough, much less an Anglo American Western civilizational remnant offshoot.
This has been the tragic legacy of the Cecil Rhodes project, as it morphed down through the 20th Century and beyond.
It did not start out that quite way, but that is how it has ended.
Rhodes thought there was only one civilization, the English one, really. He wanted to lift all peoples into an advanced state, under enlightened English tutelage.
Blunder.
