Interesting that he refers to mudslinging. Muckraking seems to have been reserved as a term for Democratic publicists, apparently, but not exclusively. Anderson, Pearson, etc.
Similar principles however apply. McCarthy was a politician who was really a glorified muckraker, so to speak, though not a quote publicist except through others, and his committee. He had quite a bully pulpit.
