Nothing in federal constitution, in my judgment, has ultimately prevented a state from establishing its own state religion, within the US.
There were six such colonies, with established religions, at the founding.
My knowledge in this area is spotty, to say the least.

I should perhaps point out, I am not an advocate for 50 different states' rights, but rather for a stronger central government. I merely make this rather obvious point.
