NAFTA GOT CHINA INTO THE WTO
Looking back, they are proud of this.
This is an accomplishment they were going for.
Greatly expanded trade with China, rather than with Mexico, turned out to be what queered NAFTA for Mexico.
Of course, NAFTA was just one more queering of trade, in a long series, for us.
Why are so many Mexicans coming here? Because they are physically able.
Not so much because expanded trade with China robbed it from them. Mexicans would have kept coming here in great numbers, queering from NAFTA or not.
Re the history of the largely bi partisan Presidential queering of trade, terms search: Trading American Interests, Trading Places, etc.

RE TRUMP WALL SALINAS CAME UP WITH NAFTA AT DAVOS QUITE FITTING
He said something to the effect, if you don't do it, we'll flood your country with illegals.
Well, Clinton did NAFTA, and the country is still being flooded with illegals of course.
What would happen with, say, a Venezuela type total political and economic meltdown, in Mexico? Even a wall might not be enough.
Or do we say something like, "so sorry your country is having so many economic problems, sure we'll take 20,000,000, of your 120,000,000 destitute Mexicans, and we'll make our Economic partners in Europe take all the rest"?

TURKEY THREATENS EU WITH MIGRANT SURGE NAFTA ALL OVER AGAIN
Let Turkey into the West, and you will get them anyway.
Keep them out and you will get them anyway.
That has been the lesson in spades of NAFTA.
You will get millions of Mexicans, and South and Central Americans, coming through the same border, regardless of what you do.
Just think about Asians, millions of them, rolling across Eurasia to Europe.
What is there really to stop them? The EU?
Russia, and the Muslims, are better candidates to stop them, but, think about it.

RE BBC IMMIGRATION INTO GERMANY FROM SOUTHERN EU CONSERBERALS AND LIBERVATIVES
Maybe Germany can follow the UK, out of the EU.
This would be a really good issue to do it.
Back in the 80s 90s remember NAFTA, over here? Clinton, a free trade, and probably free immigration liberal, made the argument that if we agreed to boost trade with NAFTA, that would help stem the tide of illegal Mexican immigration.
Similar arguments no doubt are being made now re loans to the South EU: if we make the loans, maybe that will stem the tide of northward immigration......
I would have been with Kohl, back in the 80s, re the Turks, not for conservative reasons; rather for nationalistic ones. Kohl's hands were tied by his liberal international economic order too.
Conservatives love liberal trade, but hate liberal immigration.
Liberals love liberal trade and love liberal immigration.
Utopian socialists, and communists, if there are any left, are globalist laborites, arguing for example that only a globalist proletariat, not a nation state one, is ever justified, and that labor should not be exploited anywhere. Presumably workers should be able to move anywhere on the globe they most want to be, and where they are most wanted and needed by other workers. (Whereas trade unions tended to be nationalistic.)
Neither conservatives, liberals, nor socialists or communists, are really friends of a nation state concept regarding trade or immigration.
Call them perhaps conserberals, or libervatives.
