PLAYING THREE SIDES IN THE COLD WAR

Another reference for my allusions to team play, playing both sides, and whatever else one can make of this.

Johnson has an interesting passage, in ...WHO GOVERNS? re Cold War trade with PRC, Taiwan, and US, simultaneously, although he also points out it was not a one way street. P. 235 and following

MISE EN SCENE RE CHINA JAPAN AMERICA KRUGMAN NYT TODAY DE LA TOUR CARD PLAYERS THE OPEN SOCIETY AND ITS FRIENDS

He talks about sharp, simple realities, re currencies, bonds, trade, jobs etc.

American policymakers, 'being taken', goes way back. See some of the prior posts, 'Playing Three Sides In the Cold War', Team Play, Maverick, etc.

There are sharper, simpler, realities, however.

One could do an interesting cartoon, using de la Tour's The Ace of Diamonds, or The Ace of Clubs, as a model.

Uncle Sam would be the 'taken' old lady, but would have to be in drag for this one; it's not that far fetched. Could also be the Maverick Executive in drag.
Cards could also double for currency, and for bonds.

MISE EN SCENE:
To one side, a fireplace; at the hearth a large long metal log poker, labelled 'Wittgenstein's Poker' (or 'Wittgenstein's Wien'). On the playing table, an elaborate decanter, glasses all around, the decanter labelled 'Gin'.
One player, call her Europa, is nodding off. Another, an Asian male, whispering to a third, Asian male, next to the nodder, 'Poke Her'. The Maverick, on the other side of nodder, gesticulating "Pop Her" (Popper).
The Caption above might Read

The one below, being announced apparently by the old Lady Uncle Sam Maverick, laying down her cards on the table, the one word

"Gin".

PLAYING THREE SIDES ECONOMISTS' ACCOUNTS OF THE RISE OF CHINA SINCE 1980

Why not give another account, a darker account, perhaps the real account, of the sudden and otherwise inexplicable rise of industrial China, since say 1980...

It has to do with the dark side of Japanese economic development throughout Asia, and the concomitant hollowing out of the West.

This sudden economic miracle, PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON, has been described, by Thurow and others, as having been founded somehow on brilliant Chinese agrarian reforms and suddenly boosted agrarian productivity which then allowed a take off of industrialization through a sudden influx of freed up rural labor into Chinese cities..... that is the liberal economists' story, it seems. I haven't studied it closely, but that is what Thurow has said in a lecture I watched.

So, what do you think the true story might look like?

Think about it.

BBC CHINA FREE RIDER BASHING SAME OLD STORY DIFFERENT COUNTRY

As Prestowitz pointed out in Trading Places, and many others have too, opening EU markets to Asian trade was our, call it Cold War, idea.

Congratulations.

Win Win.

Here is a reference to an older post, on a Krugman essay, in connection with Germany's China trade:

False. Eg: Japan.......

BBC sovereignty at bay Okinawa China Japan and you

Now seems indeed a very opportune moment for these goodly academics to discuss Okinawa etc., given the shifting, kaleidoscopic international scene.

terms search: fattening things up, Mary Poppins, leverage, playing three sides, etc.

We need to appease both of their ways out, say, with more soft power, market opening, initiatives.

Australia perhaps has already thrown in the appeasement towel, for China: too much ' leverage ',  so to speak....

Never, in the field of human conflict, has so much been given away to so many, by so few, for so little, so quickly. You can quote me.

RE BBC ARTICLE RE EAST CHINA SEA ISLANDS CHINA JAPAN

They, BBC,  mentioned in passing that Japan and China established diplomatic relations only in 1972.

(Maybe they, relations,  had existed in the past at some point.  Certainly, playing three sides, non diplomatically, in the Cold War, had long been surreptitiously going on behind the scenes.)

Coincidental that that was around the time of the Nixon Shock? The dumb money in the room.

Term search: poker, poke her, Wittgenstein, gin.

RE BBC CHINA BUYS STAKE IN HEATHROW AIRPORT

This is just a tiny example, of what one now often sees, with relatively unbridled so called market capitalism.

Can you say ' leverage decline ' re UK versus China, or China versus other global power players?

Australia has been selling big contracts to them  for a long time now.

What if the deals, some time, somehow, for some unforeseen reason, need to be unwound?

Will it just be a little matter of money?

Term search: Mary Poppins, Popper, playing three sides, etc.
