DAVID REICH NEXT QUESTION

What if the first modern humans emerged from confluence at the NorthEast corner of Africa and the Southwest corner of the Middle East, say around the Gaza Strip?

Say it was a result of unhappy mixture of whoever was there, back then. We know Neanderthals were. I think Denisovans were too.

Say it happened 50,000 years ago. Say some then went back to Africa, and others went along the coast of southern Eurasia, the standard story line.

One problem: little or no trace of Neanderthals in Africa.
