VIOLIN FOIBLES VARNISH DIALOGUE II
Violin Collector: I was told my violin has wonderful old original varnish, just like my certificate says. That is why, they say, it sounds so good!
Violin Museum Conservator: Your violin has almost no original varnish on it, based on technical testing we have done. Almost all old violins have lost their original coat of varnish, except for traces at edges.
VC: So, why does it shine so beautifully?
VMC: Later over varnishings and or later coats of shellac, wax.
