The argument from nurture, through the passage of time, begs the question.
The argument that say neanderthals became extinct, also begs the question of intelligence itself.
A population could become extinct for reasons other than those related strictly to intelligence.
The theory of natural selection seems to tell against that hypothesis, but that seems to me to be a weakness in the theory, not a matter of prehistoric fact.
And thus, also, subsequent, recorded, history is also irrelevant.
